Drawing from naval tradition, the board game known as Aliado bears a strong resemblance to Ludo, which in the Merchant Marine was referred to as Pitoco; in the Brazilian Navy, it became known as Aliado.

Historically, the game served as a means of entertainment for sailors during lengthy sea voyages. It was typically played on a canvas mat using a leather bowl.

The game has developed its own specialized terminology:

• Paiol - A square at the start of the game where all the game pieces are concentrated.
• Ás or Pio - The number 1 rolled on the die.
• Duque - The number 2 on the die.
• Terno - The number 3 on the die.
• Quadra - The number 4 on the die.
• Quina - The number 5 on the die.
• Sena - The number 6 on the die.
• Peru - A spectator who watches the game and provides random guesses; it is often said that "Peru has no homeland" and that they do not root for any player.
• Paioleiro - The player who frequently loses and returns to the starting area ("paiol").
• Polícia - When a teammate is performing well, they may focus on eliminating opponents rather than advancing their own pieces.
• Matador - An exceptional "police" who effectively captures opposing pieces.
• Sair pitocado - To move two or three pawns into the same square.
• Pitoco - To move all four pawns into the same square or to gather them during gameplay.
• Tá Sangrando - A player who has just been captured and skips a turn.
• Intoxicar - To advance several pawns together while leaving one at the starting point.
• Médico - A player who forgets to "capture" an opponent's pawn. It is often said: "The Doctor is dispensable."
